Can I move my browser favorites to my new computer?

Sure you can! We'll assume you are planning ahead and have full access to your old computer. Your favorites, or bookmarks, are located in a file on your hard drive. The basic procedure will be to locate the file, copy it to a thumb drive, insert the thumb drive in your new machine, and copy the file to its corresponding location on the new computer.

Here are the specifics, by browser.

Internet Explorer
Go to "My Computer," then C:/Documents and Settings/username/Favorites and copy them all to a file on your thumb drive. (If you have more than one User folder in Documents and Settings, you may need to look at them all until you find the correct one.) If you have Windows XP on the new computer, again go to "My Computer," then paste them into C:/Documents and Settings/username/Favorites. If you have Vista, open IE, go to "Favorites," and import them from the thumb drive.

Firefox
Open Firefox. Click Bookmarks on the top navigation bar. Depending on your version of Firefox, you will either see an option to Manage Bookmarks, or Organize Bookmarks. Clicking on Manage Bookmarks will take you to another window, where you must click on File. Organize Bookmarks takes you to a floating window where you will click on Import and Backup. In both cases, now click Export, and send them to a file on your thumb drive. On the new computer, open Firefox, follow the same steps as above, but this time Import from the thumb drive.

Safari
Open Safari. Click File on the top navigation bar, then Export Bookmarks. Save them on your thumb drive. On the new computer, open Safari, then follow the same steps, only Import from the thumb drive.
